Ground Notes

Writing from within the crèche, rather than analysing from above

As I begin this series, I am aware that some Flemish readers may feel analysed by what I write.

I will be noticing cultural patterns, workplace habits and familiar ways of speaking about children. But I was not standing outside the crèche with a clipboard, studying other people from a safe distance.

I was working inside it.

I was caring for children, responding to colleagues and families, becoming tired, feeling overstimulated, making assumptions, being triggered and occasionally getting things wrong. I was also reflecting, repairing, adapting and learning alongside everyone else.

These observations emerged from participation rather than detachment. I write as a Black British woman whose adult working life has largely unfolded within Flemish institutions, families and communities. I entered the crèche carrying my own upbringing, cultural references, professional formation, expectations, sensitivities and blind spots, just as the practices I encountered had been shaped by the histories and circumstances of the people around me.

I am not suggesting that every Flemish family, workplace or childcare setting operates in the same way. Nor do I claim a position of neutrality or superiority. I am writing from within the experience, asking what became visible to me because I was present in it.

I am also aware that observations and feedback are not received separately from the person offering them. A Black British woman naming what she notices may sometimes be experienced as reading too much into ordinary practice, speaking beyond the role given to her, or offering feedback that was never requested.

I do not write in order to deliver a verdict.

I write to place an experience on the ground between us, to examine what may be growing there, and to invite others to notice what they recognise, resist or understand differently.

These are not conclusions handed down from above.

They are notes gathered on shared ground.
